Dr Joe Appleton

Dr Joe Appleton is an experienced industry professional turned teaching-focused academic in the Department of Computer Science, University of Surrey, UK. He began his career in investment banking. Joe then embarked on a six-year start-up journey, co-founding a financial services online marketing company; as the technical co-founder, Joe was responsible for implementing a custom marketing platform. Following this entrepreneurial endeavor, he held an eight-year lectureship position in the Department of Computing, Solent University.

While Joe still actively consults and participates in industry-focused projects, his primary areas of interest are teaching and teaching-focused research. He completed his PhD in Technology Enhanced Learning at Lancaster University in 2022.

From a research perspective, Joe focuses on naturalistic technological interventions that can enhance collaborative knowledge construction.
